While the Richard Allen Museum expanded into a larger space in the mid 1980s, the work of collecting, preserving, and sharing artifacts of the Mother Bethel Church began more than 200 years ago. The land itself is a valuable treasure. Purchased in 1791 by Bishop Richard Allen, it is now the oldest continuously owned parcel of land held by African Americans in the United States. Other important artifacts date back as far as the early 1700s.
